What on earth are mala beads?

Mala is a Sanskrit word meaning garland. Mala prayer beads are essentially Hindu or Buddhist rosaries and are traditionally made with 18, 27, 54 or 108 beads. Prayer beads are used in many spiritual traditions to keep count while repeating a mantra, prayer or affirmation either quietly or aloud. In Sanskrit, the word for this practice is japa.

In the most practical sense, mala beads are used as a meditation tool. Much like a cross, your mala mantra beads may also serve as a personal symbol of faith. For me, mala prayer beads symbolize my devotion to the practice of yoga, meditation, visualization and prayer in all forms. I wear mala beads to represent my personal journey to love, mindfulness and inner peace.
